Duplicate File Finder KEY Features

The duplicate cleaner is a powerful utility for finding repeating files in a folder and all its sub folders. The free duplicate remover has the following features:

Duplicate File Finder Scan Modes

Duplicate File Finder scan results showing grouped duplicate files

Duplicate File Finder provides multiple scan methods for finding duplicate and similar files, including "100% Equal Files", "Similar Files", "File Size", "Similar File Names", and "Same File Size and Name". Choose the mode that fits your needs.

100% Equal Binary Comparison - Find true duplicates regardless of name or location

This scan mode finds exact copies of a file even if it is stored with a different name. The mode compares the actual file data and not just size, name, or checksum. Tools that scan by checksum like CRC or MD5 may incorrectly list totally different files as duplicates - this is not the case with Duplicate File Finder.

Find Similar Files - Find Similar Documents

This mode finds similar files, including similar documents, archives, or any other file type. It analyzes the files and looks for similar chunks of data, and can identify similar documents even if entire paragraphs inside are rearranged. This mode is different from our Duplicate Image Finder and Duplicate Song Finder tools, and the differences are explained here - Which Duplicate Finder To Choose?

File Size - Find Duplicates By Size

This is the fastest of all modes and looks only for files that have the same size and/or extension. Two files may share the same size and completely different content, but if you compare only files with the same extension (file type), that is very unlikely.

Find Similar File Names - Find Files With Duplicate Or Similar Names

Find similar file names even if the text is rearranged. This is a true similarity analysis, not just partial pattern matching. For example, "red rabbit jumping.mov" and "23 jumping rabbit (red).mov" will be matched as similar depending on the specified similarity level. Set the similarity level to 100% to find only exact duplicate file names.

Same File Size and Name - Instantly find duplicates with identical names and size

This is a very fast scan mode that groups files with identical names and file sizes, making it ideal for quickly finding obvious duplicates without full file comparison. You can also enable the "Treat Copy (X) as same file name" option, which allows the scan to recognize renamed copies as duplicates even when numbering or copy labels are added. For example, files like "Video.mp4", "Video - Copy.mp4", and "Video - Copy (2).mp4" will all be identified as duplicates if they have the same file size.

Compare Folders for Duplicate Files

While you can remove all duplicate files from a computer, drive, network, or folder, you can also compare two or more folders for duplicates.

Exclude a folder from self-scan in Duplicate File Finder
Exclude a folder from auto-check in Duplicate File Finder

You can set a "source" folder to exclude it from auto-check and preserve the items inside. There is a per-folder option, "Exclude from self-scan", which means the items inside that "source" folder will not be compared with each other - they will be compared only with items from the other folders in the list. Read more on How To Exclude A Folder From Scan.

There is also an "Exclude from auto-check" option, which can be used separately or in combination with the "Exclude from self-scan" option. Ticking the option for the corresponding folder means the items inside will not be marked if the auto-check feature is used. Read more on How To Exclude A Folder From Auto-Check.

"Duplicate files build up over time as you move files around, especially music, photos, and video files, leaving the originals to sit and gather dust. There are a few free applications out there that can help you de-duplicate files - a good free one is Fast Duplicate File Finder."

Jason Willis - IT Professional
Rating: Five star rating for Duplicate File Finder

I manage data across networks and systems, so accuracy matters a lot to me - I can't afford to risk sensitive files with an unreliable tool. Duplicate File Finder has been consistently precise, and it's fast too - it scans millions of files in a fraction of the time other tools I've tried have taken. The interface is simple enough that I'm not fighting it to get results, and being able to preview files before deleting anything gives me real peace of mind. Best part is it's free, and honestly more capable than some of the paid tools I've used.

Michael Johnson - Archives Department
Rating: Five star rating for Duplicate File Finder

Finding and managing duplicates is a big part of my job handling backups and archives, and Duplicate File Finder has earned its place in my toolkit. It scans through large backup sets quickly, and the ability to export results and compare folders has been genuinely useful when I need to check consistency across archive versions. I also like that I can save and load projects - on big comparisons I can pick up the next day right where I left off instead of starting over.

Duplicate File Finder Command Line

Duplicate File Finder Professional supports command-line automation, making it possible to run scheduled scans and export results without opening the user interface. This is useful for IT professionals managing backups, archives, and network storage who need to automate duplicate detection.

Duplicate File Finder Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find duplicate files on Windows 11 for free?

Download MindGems Duplicate File Finder - it is completely free with no trial period or feature lockouts. Add the folders or drives you want to scan, choose a scan mode, and click Start. The duplicate cleaner will compare actual file content and group all duplicate files together so you can review and remove them safely. It works on Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, and 7, on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

What is the fastest way to find and remove duplicate files?

Use the Same File Size and Name scan mode in MindGems Duplicate File Finder for the quickest results. This mode instantly groups files with identical names and sizes without performing a full file comparison, making it ideal for finding obvious duplicates in seconds. For a more thorough duplicate removal, use the 100% Equal Binary Comparison mode, which compares actual file data and catches duplicates even when they have different names or are stored in different folders.

Can a duplicate file finder detect files with different names?

Yes - but only if it compares actual file content rather than file names. MindGems Duplicate File Finder uses binary comparison to identify true duplicates regardless of filename, folder location, or file date. Many basic duplicate removers only compare names or sizes and will completely miss files that have been renamed or moved. If you suspect you have duplicate files with different names, use the 100% Equal Binary Comparison mode for accurate results.

How do I compare two folders for duplicate files?

Add both folders to the folder list in Duplicate File Finder and enable the Exclude from Self-Scan option on each one. This tells the duplicate cleaner to compare the two folders against each other rather than scanning each folder internally. This is useful when consolidating libraries, checking a backup against an original, or merging two collections without creating duplicates. You can add as many folders as needed and mix local drives, external drives, and network locations in the same scan.

Will a duplicate file finder delete my original files?

No - MindGems Duplicate File Finder is designed to keep your originals safe. The tool automatically identifies which files to keep and which to mark for removal, but you can review and adjust the selection before deleting anything. Files are sent to the Recycle Bin by default rather than permanently deleted, giving you a safety net to restore anything removed by mistake. You can also move duplicates to a backup folder instead of deleting them immediately.

How do I find duplicate photos, videos, and music files at the same time?

Duplicate File Finder works with all file types in a single scan - photos, videos, music, documents, archives, and any other file format. Add all your media folders to the scan list and run the 100% Equal Binary Comparison mode to find exact duplicates across all file types at once. For finding visually similar photos or duplicate songs across different formats and bitrates, MindGems also offers specialized tools - Duplicate Image Finder for photos and Duplicate Song Finder for audio files.

Can I scan an external hard drive or NAS device for duplicate files?

Yes. MindGems Duplicate File Finder supports local drives, external hard drives, USB flash drives, SD cards, NAS devices, and network storage locations. You can scan multiple locations simultaneously and even compare files across different drives in the same session. This makes it easy to find duplicates spread across your main computer, a backup drive, and a network share all at once.

What is the difference between a duplicate file finder and a duplicate photo finder?

A duplicate file finder compares files at the binary level - it identifies files that are byte-for-byte identical regardless of type. A dedicated duplicate photo finder goes further by analyzing the actual visual content of images, detecting photos that look the same even when they have different resolutions, formats, or minor edits. If you need to remove duplicate files of any type, use MindGems Duplicate File Finder. If you specifically need to find visually similar or near-duplicate photos, use MindGems Duplicate Image Finder instead.

How do I automatically keep the best copy when removing duplicates?

Use the Auto-Check feature in MindGems Duplicate File Finder. This automatically marks duplicates for removal while keeping one copy in each group based on rules you configure - such as keeping the newest file, the file in a specific folder, or the file with the longest name. The Quick-Check feature lets you refine the automatic selection further before committing to any deletions. Together these features make it possible to clean up even very large duplicate sets without manually reviewing every file.

Is it safe to use a free duplicate file finder?

Yes - if you choose a trusted one. MindGems Duplicate File Finder has been downloaded by more than 50 million users since 2001 and is verified safe by Google Safe Browsing, Norton, and carries an Extended Validation EV Code Signing Certificate. It is completely free with no adware, no bundled software, and no subscription. Be cautious with unknown free duplicate removers - some bundle unwanted software or use aggressive deletion that bypasses the Recycle Bin. Always choose a tool with a verifiable track record.

How do I find duplicate files without comparing file names?

Select the 100% Equal Binary Comparison mode in Duplicate File Finder. This mode compares the actual content of each file byte by byte, completely ignoring file names, dates, and folder locations. Two files with completely different names stored in different folders will still be identified as duplicates if their content is identical. This is the most accurate way to remove duplicate files that have been renamed or reorganized across your system.

Can duplicate file finder software scan network drives?

Yes. MindGems Duplicate File Finder supports network drives and NAS locations in addition to local and external storage. You can include network paths in your folder list alongside local folders and scan them all in a single pass. This is particularly useful for IT professionals and businesses managing shared storage, backup servers, or archive drives where duplicate files can accumulate silently over time.

How do I undo a duplicate file deletion?

If you sent files to the Recycle Bin - which is the default setting in MindGems Duplicate File Finder - simply open the Recycle Bin, select the files you want to restore, and click Restore. They will be returned to their original location. This is why it is important to use the Recycle Bin option rather than permanent deletion, especially when running a duplicate cleaner on a large collection for the first time. Always back up important files before running any duplicate removal tool.

Why does my computer have so many duplicate files?

Duplicate files accumulate in predictable ways over time - copying the same folder to a backup drive multiple times, downloading the same file more than once, importing photos or music from a device that was already imported previously, syncing files across devices that create local copies, and saving multiple versions of documents or edited photos. None of these feel significant at the time, but over months and years they can add up to gigabytes of wasted storage. Running a duplicate remover like MindGems Duplicate File Finder every few months keeps this under control.

How long does it take to scan for duplicate files on a large hard drive?

Scan time depends primarily on the number of files, the scan mode selected, and storage speed. The Same File Size and Name mode is near-instant for most libraries. The 100% Equal Binary Comparison mode reads every file completely and takes longer - but MindGems Duplicate File Finder uses multi-threaded processing to scan multiple files simultaneously, significantly reducing total scan time. On a modern SSD with a typical home library of 100,000-500,000 files, a full binary comparison scan usually completes in minutes rather than hours.
